Massif
du Mézenc

Located
in the south of the Auvergne region, at the border between the
Ardèche and Haute-Loire districts, the Mont Mézenc
(5,750 ft) is often called the Giant of the Cévennes mountains.
It is the highest point of both districts. This
former volcano is located on the water separation line between
the Atlantic and the Mediterranean Sea. It overlooks a range
of volcanoes, the likes of which can't be seen anywhere else
in Europe. The
area is a paradise for volcano enthusiasts. Phonilitic "sucs",
basaltic flows, crater lakes, fire and water have been shaping
the landscape for millions of years.

The area's geological
richness makes for a varied landscape: high plateaux covered
with "sucs", deep gorges (Gorges of the Loire), and
valleys (in Ardèche). This wild and
preserved area is a great location for walking and other open
air activities.
